Port Carbon Iron Works | 1864

This illustration comes from the 1864 Map of Schuylkill County in the collections of the Library of Congress. It shows the Port Carbon Iron Works, an operation owned and managed by T.H. Wintersteen

The Iron Works sat on Main Street, just south of the Schuylkill River in Port Carbon. This was drawn from the perspective of “Goat Hill,” the bluff upon which the town’s Civil War memorial now stands.

The homes of Palo Alto can be seen in the distant background. This illustration was made in the midst of the economic boom that came with the Civil War.
