Sledding scene in Pennsylvania’s Coal Region | Winter 1876

This scene comes from a March 1876 edition of Frank Leslie’s Illustrated Newspaper. It shows a group of mineworkers enjoying a night of sledding near a mine village and colliery somewhere in the anthracite coal fields of Northeastern Pennsylvania.

The sketch came with this description by the artist:

“The… sketch… shows the noble art of coasting as indulged in by the miners. Starting from the top of the hill where we see the ‘breaker’ outlined against the sky, it is possible in some localities to ride at lightning speed for a mile or so. The party upon the sled are certainly enjoying themselves, and they have our congratulations.

For the poor fellow who has just got off at a way station we express the deepest sympathy.”
