Scenes at a coal miners’ beer party in Schuylkill County | 1938

Photographer Sheldon Dick documented a “beer party” in the basement of a coal miner’s home in Shenandoah, Pennsylvania in 1938. The party took place in the home of Joe and Sophia Gladski (couple photographed together).

Joe Gladski worked at the Maple Hill Colliery near Shenandoah and went on to serve in leadership positions with the United Mine Workers of America (UMWA).

These photographers were part of Dick’s wider efforts to document life in Pennsylvania’s anthracite coal fields during the Great Depression.

  1. Good Pictures Jake! My Brother Rich says that for the first time in a very, very, long time an Anthracite Engineer has a leading role form the Pottsville Office! They have the upper hand for once in the Pa Coal Politics. You will need to contact me if you want to get the details. jptallman@tallmanpotatoes.com
