This illustration from the 1863 map of Schuylkill County shows the Gilberton Colliery operated by Tyson and Kendrick.
From the Pottsville Republican description of the colliery, published in 1997.
The Gilberton Colliery was located on the north side of the Mahanoy Creek in the borough for which it was named.
On June 28, 1862, Kendrick and Tyson were granted a lease on the property and drove a water-level tunnel 250 feet north to the south dip Mammoth Vein and later sank a slope on that vein 300 feet to the first level.
In 1864, Kendrick and Tyson sold the colliery to the Gilberton Coal Company, H. K. Smith & Company, for $200,000…
The colliery was purchased by the Philadelphia and Reading Coal and Iron Company in 1879 and operated until it was closed on November 10, 1938.

Always nice drawings or pictures of these Fantastic Structures, like the I-695 Beltway bridge. I am sure your Uncle George and Maybe Aunt Carol passed over this Bridge. And I have been meaning to ask you if you found anything on the Otto Colliery outside of Branchdale. Or maybe it just was called Branchdale Colliery? The Black Dirt we screened there in the late 1970’s helped with the cash flow to build our nice White & Green building outside of Muir. Kindest Regards, Joseph Tallman
