“Three Brothers from Wiconisco in the Army” | May 1918

From the Harrisburg Evening News, May 16, 1918:

“Mrs. Anna Zimmerman of [Wiconisco, Pennsylvania], is the proud mother of three sons serving their country in the Army. They are William, stationed at Camp Sherman, in Chillcothe, Ohio, as a cook; Hiram, who enlisted at the outbreak of the war and is serving as a guard at the Panama Canal, and Joseph, who is a truck driver with the American Expeditionary Forces in France.”

All three survived “The Great War.”

Hiram Zimmerman never saw action during the First World War.

Joseph Zimmerman served as a driver in Company D, 1st Ammunition Train and served in several major battles at the war’s end, including: Toul, Montdidier-Noyon, Asne-Marne, St. Mihiel, and Meuse Argonne.

William Zimmerman served in the 23rd Infantry Regiment of the US Army’s 2nd Division. He fought in several major engagements, including at St. Mihiel and in the Meuse Argonne and survived a gas attack during his service.

All three brothers, and their mother Annie, are buried at Wiconisco’s Calvary United Methodist Cemetery.
