Letters from War – A photograph of the Nazi panzer destroyed by Irvin Schwartz in the Battle of the Bulge

This is part of our “Letters from War” series documenting the World War II letters of Irvin Schwartz of Pine Grove, PA. The letters were all published in the West Schuylkill Press-Herald between 1943 and 1945.

In the weeks just after the surrender of Nazi Germany in May 1945, the West Schuylkill Press-Herald received a photograph of a German tank destroyed by Sergeant Irvin Schwartz of Pine Grove during the Battle of the Bulge in December 1944. The tank was destroyed in the intense fighting at Dom Bütgenbach on December 21, 1944.

Irvin Schwartz wrote home about his participation in that battle and the destruction of this tank here.
