In the collections of the Smithsonian Institution is an incredible primary source documenting a year’s events at an anthracite colliery in the booming era of the Coal Region.

The document is a journal for the Buck Mountain and Vulcan collieries near Mahanoy City for the year 1897. Through a crowdsourcing project, the contents of the journal have been fully digitized. The journal is a fascinating piece of Coal Region history.
