This photograph shows the march of a parade of United Mine Workers of America through the east end of Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania in August 1905. UMWA President John Mitchell addressed a large meeting of mineworkers as part of the event.

Describing the parade on August 21, 1905, the Wilkes-Barre Record discussed the parade route:

“The line of march was down Scott Street to the Central Railroad tracks, countermarch on Scott Street to Maxwell, up Maxwell to the place of meeting on the lawn of Holy Savior parish house.”

Comparing with modern Google street views, it appears this photograph was taken at the corner of Pine Street and Maxwell Street, looking east down Maxwell toward the tracks of the New Jersey Central Railroad that you can see in the distance.
