This photograph, shared in the “Schuylkill Memories” column of the Pottsville Republican in December 1990, shows an incredible photograph of the United Mine Workers of America (UMWA) band for the the Kehley Run Colliery chapter of the union.
The Kehley Run Colliery was located near Shenandoah, Pennsylvania.
This particular photograph is extraordinary because it captures the image of several soon-to-be-famous members of the band.

“Seated fourth from left is Jimmy Dorsey, sixth from left, his father Tom Dorsey Sr., and seventh, Tommy Dorsey. Jimmy and Tommy, of Shenandoah, later performed as the Dorsey Brothers during the Big Band era,” wrote the Republican in their “Memories” caption.

Original photograph was given to the Republican by David Meyer and John Catizone.
Here’s an example of the Dorsey Brothers Orchestra from a record recorded in 1935.
