This early photograph shows a view looking west across the Schuylkill River and Schuylkill Canal to the Mansion House Hotel in Mount Carbon, Pennsylvania.

This small town, located just south of Pottsville on the south side of Sharp Mountain, served as an important transportation link between Schuylkill County and the coal fields to the north and the communities southward along the Schuylkill Canal and, later the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad.
The once elegant hotel at the gateway to Pottsville was torn down in 1930.
