In researching for our “Letters from War” series earlier this year, we came across an advertisement for Wilkes-Barre’s Stegmaier Brewing Company in the pages of the West Schuylkill Press-Herald on December 22, 1944.
The advertisement wished its readers “A Victorious New Year” as the United States entered the final stages of the Second World War. When this ad appeared in the Press-Herald, and in other Coal Region newspapers, American forces faced a relentless German onslaught in Belgium’s Ardennes Forest that became known as the “Battle of the Bulge.”
