Lattimer was a focus of the story after a September 1897 labor massacre on the village’s outskirts made headlines across the world.

The illustration appeared with the following caption:

“A breaker at Lattimer – this is the breaker on which the striking miners were marching when they were fired upon by the sheriff’s deputies.”
