On November 11, 1918, a quiet fell across Europe for the first time in four years as the First World War concluded with an armistice signed between the Central Powers and the Allied nations, including the United States.
In Pennsylvania’s anthracite coal fields, the news arrived that peace was at hand in the wee hours of Monday, November 11th.
Special newspaper editions carried the news as Pennsylvanians prepared raucous parades celebrating the role American armed forces played in the Allied victory.
